Also known as ‘Welcome to Aperture’. Okay so the first chapter is ready! Hope you enjoy it and I’m very excited to continue this!
If you’d rather a DA link to read it then here:X
Your name is John Egbert and holy crap is this test chamber amazing or what? You’ve been at it for two hours now. The higher ups should’ve known better than to put you in a chamber full of ledges that are perfect for flinging yourself off of. Man you could soar through the air and fly through portals all day - if the scientists would let you of course. You’re fully aware that they will eventually tell you to knock it off and force you out of the chamber if you don’t complete it, but you could honestly care less right now. Those guys need to relax. This is the most fun you ever get to have anymore.
“Well, as long as they are stored somewhere dry and warm, books are actually quite hardy! Especially if they are of a certain age- they are sewn with better stitching into the binding instead of that flimsy glue they use now.” She picked up another and flipped through it. “I have seen books in the absolute worst of conditions come through my library.”
“Hmm. Seems I’ve le^rned something tod^y then. The only w^y I could im^gine they would get too b^d is if they weren’t t^ken c^re of properly or given ^ good shelf to sit on.” You stop for a minute to inspect a book that you don’t quite remember ever reading.
She placed the book back down and looked at all the others on the shelf. “I would love to spend more time getting to know these lovely tomes. I do believe I shall have to visit again soon!”
You walk back over to her with a smile. “I’ll m^ke sure th^t the c^stle is open to you ^t ^ny time then! You c^n visit ^s much ^s you like. Would you c^re to see more of the pl^ce or will your scheduled visit not ^llow it?”
She checked her watch and sighed. “Unfortunately I must be leaving to go back home soon. But I will certainly be returning soon to familiarize myself with these lovely books!”
“Only the books?” you tease her. “^nd here I thought we h^d gotten ^long gre^t.” You turn to lead the way back out to the hall. “While it is s^d to know you’ll be le^ving I must s^y I look forw^rd to your next visit. You must be sure to st^y for longer next time.”
She laughed. “Oh, I will return for the company as well.” She smiled as her escort led her out. “I will have to make sure I stay for longer next time, this was quite the interesting jaunt!”
“Perh^ps I could even convince you to ^ttend one of those p^rties with me so I’m not quite ^s bored.” You come to a stop at the door and turn to your guest. You give her a bow and a light kiss on her hand. “This w^s indeed ^ ple^sure ^nd I believe ^ d^y well spent.”
She giggled. “It was a very good day! I will come back to visit soon!”
“Goodbye my de^r!” You give her a wave as you watch her go and make a mental note to tell the guards that she should be allowed in if she ever shows up again.

She made an interested noise and began to walk along one of the shelves. “I actually enjoy the smell of dust. It is an enjoyable scent if you know how to properly enjoy it.” She ran a finger along the books, reading the titles.
“^n interesting concept,” you muse as you stroll alongside another shelf. You don’t come in here very often so it seems your always noticing a new book that you hadn’t seen the time before. Your head tilts to the side as you try to read some of the titles better as you pass them.
She plucked a book out of the shelf at random, and flipped a few of the pages. “These are quite old, older than most of the titles I have in my own library…” She mused to herself.
“I guess th^t is to be expected. The serv^nts h^ve ^lw^ys kept every book th^t finds its w^y into the c^stle in here ^nd never bothered to remove them or reloc^te them once ^ new owner c^me ^long,” you find yourself saying quietly.
“Well, that is certainly good that they keep every book… Although the high point of having a collection this large should be reading them.” She put the book back and continued down the row. “But many of these seem to be in quite good shape for their age!”
“It would be difficult to re^d ^ll of them but m^ybe one d^y I’ll be ^ble to complete such ^ t^sk.” You wipe a bit of dust away from a few books as you pass by. “I thought some would be in poor condition considering we don’t ex^ctly h^ve ^n offici^l person who t^kes c^re of them ^ll.”

“Well, I do not know where to begin, but I am perfectly happy with you showing me around for a while…” she smiled.
You think for a moment before leading her up a case of winding stairs. “I think I know just the pl^ce to show you.” You push open a door for her and show her into the castle library. “I know its prob^bly sm^ller th^n your libr^ry-hive ^nd most of the books ^re very old, but perh^ps you’ll like this.”
She was rendered speechless for a moment at the sight of all the books. Upon the return of her voice, she managed to say with a grin “Oh my word! There are so many books! This is a very respectable library!”
You smile as you wait for her to find her voice again. “Well feel free to look ^round! I’m gl^d ^ libr^ri^n of ^ll people finds this to be ^ nice libr^ry. You’ll h^ve to forgive the dust on some of them though. Like I s^id most of these ^re very old ^nd belonged to ^ncestors of mine.”
